I know the poet Rosario Salvaggio as the organizer of literary competitions for Romantic poetry. I have participated with him for several editions in evaluating poetic texts. But his turn to writing fairy tales was something I realized the moment my eyes fell on this text.  

The same pen that was accustomed to sifting through poems and selecting their flashes is the same one that here crafted a fairy tale that speaks with the same obsessions: the obsession with recognition, the obsession with salvation, and the obsession with the sudden transformation from the margin to the center.

The story begins with a place of profound significance: "a town shaped like an amphitheater." The amphitheater is, par excellence, a space of display, a space with no privacy and no cover. It is an exposed hierarchical structure, where the poor sit at the bottom, exposed to view, while the rich sit on high to judge and watch. And when we read this place in light of the author's biography as an organizer of poetry competitions, its meaning doubles and becomes a metaphor for the competition hall itself. The front rows are for the audience, the high stage is for the jury, and the little girl lying on the straw is that unknown poetic voice sent in an envelope, waiting for the moment of being noticed.

The straw here is not merely a sign of material poverty. It is a sign of fragility and primitiveness, and of the first draft pages that any critical wind can scatter. And next to the straw come "hunger and poverty," not only as hunger for bread, but as hunger for recognition and hunger for visibility. And in a world where reality has closed all doors to social change, the Romantic writer has no choice but to resort to the door of fairy tale. And from here emerges the being of the fairy.

The fairy is presented in the text with the attribute of "mercy." It is a feminine attribute in the Mediterranean imagination, making her a substitute for absent motherhood and for a stingy heaven. Her first act is a direct act of rescue, mediated by neither condition nor test: "she took her in her arms and carried her to the sky." This act recalls the image of the Virgin carrying her child, and at the same time recalls the act of a judge who takes a raw text and lifts it into the circle of light. The flight "over mountains, seas, and rivers" contains three overlapping levels of meaning. On the geographical level it is the liberation of the self from the prison of a narrow place. On the literary level it is the text’s exit from the circle of locality to the spaciousness of circulation. And on the spiritual level it is ascent and purification, as the poor self rises to see the world from above. And the detail "the little girl gazes with her little hands" is precise in depicting childlike wonder, which is the same wonder of the unknown creator when he sees his name for the first time on the awards stage.

If the journey represents the moment of discovery, then the castle "gilded with the lights of celebration" represents the moment of confrontation with the authority of recognition. The "great" ball is a social ritual for the display of class, and in the literary context it is the awards ceremony. And the first clash occurs at the door: "the servants try to push her away" because she is "dressed in rags." Here the text declares its criterion explicitly: value equals appearance. Whoever does not wear the uniform of authority becomes invisible, or a nuisance. How many authentic texts have been ignored because they came from a "shack" and not from a "palace."

And the most important moment of transformation comes with the strike of the wand: "she transforms her into a dress studded with glittering diamonds." Diamond is not only wealth, but a material that breaks light and reflects it back, and it is the hardest of substances. As if the writer gives talent a shield of recognition that criticism cannot penetrate. And the phrase "the reflected lights of the diamonds attract people’s attention" reveals a biting critical paradox: attention is not given to the essence, but to the reflection, that is, to the brilliance of the award and the pomp of the crowning. It is a criticism directed at the literary community that applauds shiny names more than it listens to sincere voices. And the questions follow, which the girl cannot answer, because society asks about origin and title before it asks about the human being.

And the story reaches its emotional climax with the wife of the lord of the castle’s sentence: "I have been waiting for you for a long time... as if you were a daughter." This sentence overturns the balance of the relationship. Here, authority is the one that admits deficiency, and the rich is the one who declares his lack of innocence and authenticity. The girl did not go to take from the palace; rather, the palace came looking for her. Thus the classic Cinderella equation is reversed: the heroine no longer flees from cruelty to the palace, but the palace descends to the shack. And in the literary scene this corresponds to the great critic who crosses the distance to the young poet’s house to say to him: "We were looking for you."

And the poetic exaggeration reaches its peak in the phrase "the sun rises, but the child... her brilliance surpasses the rays of the sun." The writer decides that the light of innocence and true talent is stronger than natural light, and that the miracle surpasses the laws of nature and the mechanisms of propaganda. And the dialogue between the court and the girl about "where did you live" is like an official documentation of the miracle before acknowledging it.

As for the ending, it is what gives the story its distinction. The heroine did not stay in the palace, and the prince did not marry her. Rather, "they took the carriages and led them to their poor parents." Here the "ethics of grace" are revealed: whoever is given should not forget where he came from. And the scene of "parents of humble origins throwing themselves at the feet of the daughter in the shiny dress" is a complex scene that combines prostration, pride, shock, and fear. It corresponds to the scene of parents seeing their son on screen receiving an award. And the girl’s reply, "I am your daughter and I do not know what happened," confirms that the external transformation did not touch the internal essence. The dress did not change the heart, and the award did not change the humility. And the girl’s final gesture confirms her authenticity, and the recipient realizes that the miracle was not in the appearance but in steadfastness.

And the story concludes with a direct didactic sentence: "Because each of us has our own guardian angel." Thus the narrator shifts from storyteller to Romantic poet addressing the reader directly, and giving him a commandment of hope. And thus the circle expands from an individual tale to a general law: for every deprived person there is someone who sees him, and for every unknown person there is someone who lifts him up.

And if we look at the artistic structure, we find that the text is written in the spirit of a poet. The narration in the third person is characterized by the smoothness of the storyteller, and the language, though prose, is saturated with images: "she wakes gently," "the enchanting dreamlike scenes." Also, the deliberate repetition of the phrase "the little girl" seven times reinforces the trait of innocence and weakness that first evokes pity and then admiration. The entire text is built on sharp contrasting dualities: straw and diamond, shack and castle, darkness and light. These dualities are the engine of the drama, and also the engine of the idea of the award: the transition from nothing to everything. And the time of the tale is condensed into one night, from sleep to awakening to return, which gives it the character of a dream and the character of a sudden announcement of the result.

On the psychological level, the story can be read as a "compensatory dream." Harsh reality generates in the unconscious an image of salvation. But Salvaggio does not leave the dream in the realm of wish, but makes it a reality within the text, as if he is telling the creator: dream, for your dream may come true if it is sincere. On the social level the story does not call for revolution, but for vertical solidarity, for authority descending to the base. This is a conception close to Italian Catholic thought which sees good descending from above. And in the literary context this corresponds to the role of major institutions in adopting small talents.

And on the literary level the story turns into an extended metaphor for the process of creation and publication. The straw is the first draft, the fairy is the editor or the jury that sees what others do not see, the magic wand is the process of revision and editing, the diamond dress is the elegant printed book that catches the eye, and the return to the parents is the writer’s return to his first audience in humility.

Salvaggio wrote his story with the eye of a director. The lighting moves from the darkness of the hut to the dazzle of the castle to the sunlight that the heroine surpasses. And the movement goes from the stillness of the bed to flight in the sky to the movement of carriages. And the sound goes from the silence of poverty to the music of the party to the sobbing of reunion. All of this makes the text easily adaptable into visual and auditory scenes.

In conclusion, the story "The Fairy and the Poor Girl" is not a tale about diamonds, but a tale about memory and recognition. The greatest terror that afflicts a human being and a creator is that the world will forget him, and that he will die on the straw without anyone seeing him. The fairy in the text is the memory of the universe that says: "I see you." And the prince’s wife is the society that says: "We were waiting for you." Some may see this hope as naivety, but in an age of speed, algorithms, and consumer publishing, this hope becomes a necessity. It is a belief that the sincere text, even if written on straw, will find someone to carry it to the sky.

"Because each of us has our own guardian angel." It is not an ending, but a will. A will from a poet who spent his life searching among papers for angels, and from a competition organizer who knows that the greatest miracle is for a text to find someone to put it in a dress of diamonds.

"The Fairy and the Poor Girl"

In a town shaped like an amphitheater, a very poor family lived. But a merciful fairy wanted to appear in a dream to the little girl who was sleeping in her bed full of straw to sleep. She took her in her arms and carried her to the sky. The little girl wakes gently, flying over mountains, seas, and rivers to enchanting dreamlike scenes. The little girl gazes with her little hands to wake up better and watch everything the world deprived her of living in that miserable village full of poverty and hunger. Then the fairy placed her on the ground in front of a castle gilded with lights celebrating the great ball given by the lord of the castle. Seeing the little girl dressed in rags, the servants try to push her away, but the fairy with her magic wand transforms her into a dress studded with glittering diamonds. The reflected lights of the diamonds attract the attention of the people at the party who came down to admire this wonderful girl in her magnificent clothes, asking her many questions that the girl cannot answer. The party is upstairs in the room where they celebrated and where every guest attended for the marvelous beauty and rich dress. The wife of the lord of the castle sees the child and says to her "I have been waiting for you for a long time... as if you were a daughter." The sun rises but the child wearing this shiny dress surpasses the brilliance of the sun’s rays. The court, the prince speaks with the child about where she lived. They took the carriages and led them to their poor parents, saying: "I live here." The prince’s wife saw the shack where they lived and the parents of humble origins threw themselves at the feet of the daughter in the shiny dress. The little girl tells her parents, "I am your daughter and I do not know what happened. I woke up dressed like this," striking them with the impact of that gesture that makes the prince’s wife also realize happiness and emotion. Heaven completed its miracle for her because each of us has our own guardian angel.
